STORM DESK UPDATE: SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE TODAY

The Storm Prediction Center has placed northern and north-central Maine in a Slight Risk — Level 2 of 5 — for severe thunderstorms today.

This does not mean everyone will experience severe weather. It means storms that develop may become better organized and capable of producing damage.

Highest-risk area: The North Woods, northern Piscataquis County and much of Aroostook County. A lower Marginal Risk — Level 1 of 5 extends across much of central, eastern and southern Maine.

Timing: Storms should develop from west to east this afternoon, with the greatest concern roughly 2–7 PM. The threat should diminish around sunset.

Main threats:

• Damaging straight-line wind gusts
• Hail
• Frequent lightning and torrential rain
• A very isolated tornado cannot be ruled out

Cloud cover and some wildfire smoke remain wildcards. If the sky brightens and temperatures rise, the atmosphere could become more unstable and storms may intensify quickly.

The bottom line: Most communities will not experience severe weather, but any storm today should be taken seriously—especially across northern Maine. Keep alerts turned on and be ready to move indoors if a warning is issued.

Humidity rises greatly by Wednesday with dew points well into the 70s for a good chunk of New England, including Maine.
