Heat Wave
Posted by Jason Nappi on June 6, 2008
Yes, I know it’s not summer yet. However, mother nature doesn’t care and while I will not get into the reasons why It’s going to be in the 90′s so early in the year, I will explain how hot it’s going to get. This will NOT be a global warming debate.
So all we have to do is watch what is called the “Bermuda High” move near “Bermuda” and start a strong southwesterly wind from Mexico and we will be in trouble. That hot, humid air will travel from the US/Mexico border and make its way all the way to Maine and even parts of Canada. We are talking the hottest air so far this year and some of the most humid air since the middle of last summer. It is going to be hazy, hot, AND humid.
The dewpoint is the measure of the amount of moisture in the air and has little to do with the relative humidity. When I say it’s going to be humid, I mean it’s going to be uncomfortable. Too many times meteorologists don’t explain what humid means to the general public. Relative humidity doesn’t measure the “comfort factor.” Relative humidity is almost always near 75% every morning in plenty of locations. Someone that knew little about the atmosphere would then conclude it was “humid” every morning. Not true. 75% relative humidity can be quite comfortable. 75 degree dewpoint, that is a tropical air mass and it will feel like you are suffocating (if you are not used to that type of air).
Stay cool this weekend and through Tuesday. The cold front will not bring relief until sometime on Tuesday. The next 4 days will be brutal at times. However, some people will love the above average heat and humidity. It will feel like the Gulf of Mexico in the summer as far as southern Canada.
Reminder: Heat is the number one killer of all extreme weather. Go to the mall or movies during the hottest parts of the day to avoid heat exhaustion. Start A/C early in the day so you don’t spend a ton of money trying to cool the apt. or house down all day. It is likely that by waiting until you get home in the afternoon to put the A/C on….will cause a huge surge in your electricity b/c the unit will have to run a max power to try and cool your apt. down.
